General Session - IP via Satellite: What Every Telecom Company Should Know
IP is heralded as the most important development driving the satellite market over the next several decades. Through a range of IP technology on the ground and in orbit, new applications and services are making satellite solutions more relevant than ever in the current telecom environment. IP is also enabling satellites to transition from a standalone solution to an increasingly important component of telecom networks around the world, again with IP serving as the driving force behind this integration. In essence, IP enables users and network providers to remain most concerned with applications and coverage over promotion of any single transmission technology, and satellites serve a vital role in this new context. This integrated panel of experts will discuss the use of IP over satellite in order to answer the following questions:

Moderator: Christopher Baugh, President, NSR
Speakers: Joe Boone, Vice President, Systems Architecture, iDirect
                    Mike Cook
, Senior Vice President, Hughes Network Systems
Mohammad Marashi, Vice President, Product Strategy & Development, Intelsat
David Myers, Executive Vice President and General Manager, CapRock Government Solutions

Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) - Will IP Move the Market to Mainstream?
Demand for IP-based communications is growing among mobile service aficionados that increasingly appreciate the powerful attributes of the transmitted information packet to addressable sites. After seeing the early success of mobile broadband satellite IP-solutions such as BGAN and Thuraya IP, the MSS industry is entering an age of IP networking where the question of offering services and applications based on this communication protocol are more than ever a hot topic. Equipment and service providers are seeking to take advantage of the features and complementary capabilities offered by packet-switched TCP/IP communications, while enhancing the delivery of information between nodes in their network. As powerful next generation satellites are launched in the next few years to become part of IP-based terrestrial networks, the whole MSS value chain is embarking on a redesign of its value proposition that is likely to affect all players.
This session will seek to assess the speed of change taking place, from traditional MSS circuit-switched solutions to this new paradigm, and what this means for the industry and the customer in terms of quality and reliability of service. The discussion will highlight the challenges of developing and producing IP-based MSS for the whole MSS ecosystem (terminals, networks, integration).

Moderator: Claude Rousseau, Senior Analyst, NSR
Speakers: Christian Gates, VP of Strategy, SkyTerra
Steve Gizinski, President and CEO, CVG, Inc./Avtec Systems, Inc.
Larry Paul, VP Business Development & Portfolio Management, Vizada, Inc.
Don Thoma, Executive VP, Marketing, Iridium
                    Robert Thompson
, Senior Director, Satellite Services, ARINC

12:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.

Anna GomezLuncheon and Keynote Address
The policy issues facing satellite players over the next several months and years are as complex as ever.  With this in mind, Ms. Gomez will discuss the NTIA's position and perspective on a range of satellite-related issues, such as the DTV transition, broadband initiatives/stimulus and other policy issues to be tackled by the NTIA and the U.S. Government.   If you are interested in how the new administration policies will affect satellite companies in the next few years, this is a must-attend session!

Keynote Speaker: Anna M. Gomez, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information, NTIA

1:15 p.m. - 2:15 p.m.

Enterprise Applications – IP via Satellite as Both a Common Denominator and Common Growth Driver
While the satellite industry has yet to find a “killer app”, multiple enterprise applications are expected to witness steady growth especially in the current economic environment. What has emerged as a common denominator is the use of IP for applications across all major industry verticals. This segment of the IP Satellite Summit examines the applicability of satellite solutions in the broader enterprise environment and seeks to identify where satellite fits best for enterprises around the globe. By enabling applications such as Remote VPN Connectivity, Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) and Business Continuity, IP-based satellite solutions are increasingly a component of the complex enterprise network and are now beyond the realm of Internet access. Questions to discuss include:

Moderator:  Dan Campbell, President, Millennia Systems, Inc.
Speakers: Sean Applegate, Federal Systems Engineer, Riverbed Technology
                    Alasdair Calder
, Director, Product Management, Spacenet, Inc.
Greg Pelton, Chief Development Officer-IRIS, Cisco Systems
Tom Percich, VP, Business Development, Diversified Media Group
Eric Wolff, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Blue Coat Systems, Inc.

2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Hybrid Wireless-Satellite: Will the SATCOM Industry Catch the Wave or Miss the Boat?
Is a hybrid wireless-satellite offering the next big thing for the satellite industry? The wireless ecosystem continues to be developed at a blistering pace. Chipsets continue to exponentially increase processing power, while laptops, mobile phones, personal music and gaming terminals, among others, are taking up bandwidth at higher levels. Satellite platforms that have thus far been relegated to serve a backhaul niche in the wireless world will have to evolve quickly in order to gain greater participation in the development of the wireless web and the wireless ecosystem. This session will tackle the following questions:

Moderator: Jason Bates, Editor, Via Satellite
Speakers: Sylvain Bowyer, Director - Solutions Management, Alcatel-Lucent
Benoit Fleury, VP, Satellite-Cellular Division, OmniGlobe Networks, Inc.
Brian Gardepe, SVP, Strategy and Technology, OpenRange Communications, Inc.
David Marshack, SVP Product and Device Strategy, TerreStar
                    Jani Lyrintzis
, VP of Professional Terminal Solutions, Elektrobit
                    David Zufall
, Senior Vice President, Network Systems, ICO Global Communications

Satellite Broadband Services: Forever Niche or Taking the Lead in Underserved Markets?
Satellite broadband Internet access services are inherently a satellite IP service. Service success to date has been impressive, but challenges abound. Often sold as “better than dial-up” today, satellite broadband must move to a future where a 512 Kbps or even 1 Mbps offer seems slow in the eyes of the consumer. High throughput satellites (HTS) are one of the keys to the future, yet distribution chains will also be crucial. Further, government efforts at bringing metro-equivalent broadband to rural areas could help or hobble the satellite market depending on how the policy makers define broadband and how much influence terrestrial service provider’s lobbyists have in forming the policy decisions. This session will address not only the technical issues of satellite broadband as an attractive platform for delivery of consumer IP services, but the business issues that can enhance or hinder the future of the market as well as the looming policy debates in North America, Europe and elsewhere that could spell doom or wild success for the market.

Moderator: Patricia Cooper, President, Satellite Industry Association
Speakers: Jeff Burlock, VP, Technology, Barrett Xplore
                    Robert Feierbach, Head, Tooway
Erwin Hudson, Executive Vice President and CTO, Wildblue Communications, Inc.
Tom Moore, President, ViaSat Satellite Holdings
Norbert Willems, Managing Director, ASTRA Broadband Services S.A.
